UK newspaper circulations collapse

Recently we told you about US newspaper circulations collapsing. It’s no surprise that this trend is happening worldwide, with British newspapers being the latest to report huge drops in circulation. Latest ABC figures from the UK reveal circulation losses for most key titles, including The Times and The Sun.

Partly due to the avalanche of good quality free titles in the capital, the London Evening Standard dropped 14% year on year to October 2006. The Sunday Times dropped 8%, this fall being attributed to an increase in cover price when it became the first UK title to hit the £2 barrier.

With fewer excuses, other newspapers dropped heavily:

  • The People lost 13%
  • News Of the World dropped 9%
  • The Times lost 7%
  • The Guardian lost nearly 5%
  • The Daily Mirror lost 5%
  • The Sun lost 4%

In fact the only newspapers to show gains were the quality Sunday papers that took advantage of The Sunday Times. The Observer went up in circulation by just under 8%.

All this data really means only one thing - people are reading newspapers less and less. They are turning to online sources to read their news.
